But Google Drive may resolve that. I use Dropbox and Goodreader for iPad, e.g. right this moment I logged into my laptop to download a bunch of pdfs in one go from Blackboard using DownThemAll for Firefox, and put them in my Dropbox. Then I press a button in Goodreader and it syncs its file collection, and I start reading and annotating lecture notes offline. If Google Drive gets as much traction as Dropbox, you'll be able to do the same with documents... the important part here being that Drive has Docs built in, so you can edit the files in your browser too.

I dunno. I think they only support Chrome for desktop right now. That's the only one I have heard of for sure anyway.

Yep, you're right, that is definitely a drawback if you're concerned about multi-platform use. DRM sucks. I have never bought an iBook, but if I could read one on my Kindle or phone as well as just my iPad, perhaps I would. I've certainly bought a bunch of Kindle titles. But then Amazon always seem to have the best prices, which is probably my main concern. If I read it once on iPad, I'll probably never read it again anyhow, and if I do want to, I'll pirate it without compunction, having paid for it once already.

In fact... even Google Play Books is available for iPad: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/google-play-books/id400989007?mt=8

There's no format more restrictive than Apple's. And they use that to force people to remain with their products. That's called anti-competitive business practices. Every other ebook retailer allows their books to work on competing platforms except for Apple.

It doesn't matter what format Kindle books are in, they still work on PC, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, and iPad. Because the Kindle software is all-platform. You can use the Kindle software on any device you buy (for free), so you can read the book you bought, without having to buy their device. On the other hand, if you buy an iBook, you have to buy Apples products in order to read it, because Apple won't release iBooks for Android.
